Assistant Principal's Message
Greetings Joyce Kilmer community!
My name is Ashley Adams and I am the assistant principal and anti-bullying specialist. I am honored and excited about the opportunity to get to know you and your children! I am eager to continue the school year and what I know will be a productive year full of learning and memorable experiences!
So you have a chance to get to know me, I want to share some background information with you. This is my eleventh year in education and my eleventh year living in New Jersey. Prior to becoming an administrator, I was an elementary classroom teacher for five years in Newark. I am originally from Los Angeles, California. I attended the University of California, Davis where I double majored in Sociology and African-American Studies. After graduation, I joined Teach for America and was placed in Newark, New Jersey as a 3rd grade teacher. I fell in love with teaching and loved my students so much that I decided to loop with them to 4th grade. For three years I taught 4th grade Language Arts and Social Studies while attending Columbia, Teachers College earning a Masters in Sociology and Education. I then joined an administrative training program called New Leaders and moved up to 5th grade teaching Math and Science. During this time, I earned a second Masters in Educational Leadership from Baruch College. Currently, I am enrolled in a doctoral program at Rutgers, New Brunswick.
Over the course of this school year, I will work diligently to ensure your child feels appreciated and is excited about learning and coming to school. I expect, as I know you do, that your child will make significant academic gains while developing both socially and emotionally, in order to be fully prepared for continued success. I believe this academic progress will empower your child in their future decisions and afford them opportunities throughout their academic career and their lives. I understand the importance of a strong home-school connection and, in order for your child to accomplish our ambitious and rigorous goals for the school year, I look forward to creating positive, lasting relationships with you and your family. Since you are the primary influencers on your child’s education, I will rely on your insights and reinforcement to help your child achieve success at Joyce Kilmer.
I look forward to communicating with you throughout the year. Please feel comfortable contacting me to discuss your child’s progress, ask questions, or raise concerns.
Thank you in advance for your support and involvement in your child’s education this year!
In partnership,
Ashley Adams
