School Counseling
The Elementary School Counselors play a vital role in our schools and also as members of our wider K-12 School Counseling Program. Research supports that the development of a comprehensive School Counseling Program has a positive impact on student achievement. School Counselors at all levels are focused on supporting all students in the areas of academics, social-emotional well being, and college/career readiness.
According to the American School Counselor Association, "The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. Elementary school counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents and the community to create a safe and respectful learning environment."
The Mahwah Schools are committed to our Elementary School Counseling program by offering both direct and indirect services to all students K-5. The School Counselors work hand in hand with faculty and parents to maximize each student's experience in our schools. Counselors work collaboratively to support student growth using CASEL'S 5 Core Competencies:
- Self-awareness
- Self-management
- Responsible decision making
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
